Free Black Militia of Puerto Rico, 1790

During the four centuries that Puerto Rico was part of the Spanish Empire, it was considered the key to the Indies, a place of supply and a port for the Spanish fleet. The Spanish troops stationed there were always scarce, so militias were formed in which Puerto Ricans who fought with great courage to repel British, French and Dutch invasions.

The Free Black Militia was composed of a Captain, a Lieutenant, a Second Lieutenant, a First Sergeant, two Second Sergeants, six First Lines, six Second Lines, a Drum, a Fife, eighty-five Soldiers and ten supernumerary Soldiers.
